Topic: JEHOVAH ROHI – The LORD Our SHEPHERD – Part 1
MEMORIZE: “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” Psalm 23:1
Scripture Reading: Psalms 23
EXPOSITION:
David was an experienced shepherd from his childhood. On several occasions he was left alone in the wilderness with his father’s flock. The heart of his father could trust him that his sheep will not get lost, as long as David is in charge – 1 Samuel 16:10-11. He was sometimes faced with wild animals which came to attack his sheep and because of his love for these sheep, he endangered his life and make sure he killed them and rescue his father’s sheep. Here is his testimony before king Saul: “And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear:” 1 Samuel 17:34-36.
In describing God as his shepherd, David wrote out of his golden experience. Sheep are completely dependent on the Shepherd for provision, guidance and protection. The New Testament called Jesus Christ our god Shepherd; the great Shepherd – Heb. 13:20; and the Chief Shepherd – 1 Peter 5:4. As the Lord is the good Shepherd, so we are His sheep – not frightened, passive animals, but obedience followers, wise enough to follow one who will lead us in the right places and in right ways. This psalm does not focus on the animal – like qualities of sheep, but on the discipleship qualities of those who follow. When you recognize the good shepherd, follow Him!
PRAYER POINT:
Lord, I see and admit you as the shepherd of my soul. Provide, guide and protect me in all my daily living.
