TRUE FREEDOM (INDEPENDENT) – Part 1

SUNDAY, 1ST OCTOBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  TRUE FREEDOM (INDEPENDENT) – Part 1

MEMORIZE: “And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.” Luke 13:12

SCRIPTURE READING: Luke 13:10-17

“And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. 11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. 12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. 13 And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. 14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day. 15 The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? 16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day? 17 And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.”

EXPOSITION:

Our Lord Jesus spent his sabbaths in the synagogues giving the miraculous cure to a woman that had been long under a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years, Luke 13:10-11. We should make conscience of doing so. She had an infirmity, which an evil spirit, by divine permission, had brought upon her, which was such that she was bowed together by strong convulsions, and could in no wise lift up herself; and, having been so long thus, the disease was incurable; she could not stand erect, which is reckoned man's honour above the beasts. Observe, Though she was under this infirmity, by which she was much deformed, and made to look mean, and not only so, but, as is supposed, motion was very painful to her, yet she went to the synagogue on the sabbath day. Note, Even bodily infirmities, unless they be very grievous indeed, should not keep us from public worship on the sabbath days; for God can help us, beyond our expectation.

The offer of this cure to one that sought it not speaks of the mercy and grace of Christ: When Jesus saw her, he called her to him, Lu 13:12. It does not appear that she made any application to him, or had any expectation from him; but before she called he answered. She came to him to be taught and healed, and then Christ gave this relief to her bodily infirmity.

The cure effectually and immediately wrought bespeaks his almighty power. He laid his hands on her, and said,"Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity; though thou hast been long labouring under it, thou art at length released from it."

Let not those despair whose disease is chronic, who have been long in affliction loose hope. God can at length relieve them, therefore though he tarry wait for him. Though it was a spirit of infirmity, an evil spirit, that she was under the power of, Christ has a power superior to that of Satan, is stronger than he. Though she could in no wise lift up herself, Christ could lift her up, and enable her to lift up herself. She that had been crooked was immediately made straight, and the scripture was fulfilled (Ps 146:8): The Lord raiseth them that are bowed down. This cure represents the work of Christ's grace upon the souls of the people. The greatest bondage is of the soul of sinner unto eternal destruction. When the soul is saved, it is delivered from the power and rule of the devil unto eternal life. As it is written, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” John 8:36. Sin destroys its victims… “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people” Proverbs 14:34. Christ in his gospel calls and invites those to come to him for healing that labour under spiritual infirmities, and, if he calls us, he will undoubtedly help us when we come to him.

ACTION POINT:  Christ in his gospel calls, if he calls us, he will undoubtedly help us when we come to him.

IT IS NOT IN VAIN TO TRUST IN GOD

SATURDAY, 30TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  IT IS NOT IN VAIN TO TRUST IN GOD

MEMORIZE: “The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. 26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.” Lamentations 3:25.

SCRIPTURE READING: Lamentations 3:25-26.

“25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. 26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.”

EXPOSITION:

Those who deal with God will find it is not in vain to trust in him; for,

a. GOD IS GOOD TO THOSE WHO TRUST HIM, Lamentation 2:25 “The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.”. He is good to all; his tender mercies are over all his works; all his creatures taste of his goodness. But he is in a particular manner good to those that wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. Note, While trouble is prolonged, and deliverance is deferred, we must patiently wait for God and his gracious returns to us. While we wait for him by faith, we must seek him by prayer: our souls must seek him, else we do not seek so as to find. Our seeking will help to keep up our waiting.  And to those who thus wait and seek God will be gracious; he will show them his marvellous lovingkindness.

b. THOSE THAT TRUST GOD WILL FIND IT GOOD FOR THEM (Lamentation 3:26 “It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.”): It is good (it is our duty, and will be our unspeakable comfort and satisfaction) to hope and quietly to wait for the salvation of the Lord, to hope that it will come, thought eh difficulties that lie in the way of it seem insupportable, to wait till it does come, though it be long delayed, and while we wait to be quiet and silent, not quarrelling with God nor making ourselves uneasy, but acquiescing in the divine disposals. Father, thy will be done. If we call this to mind, we may have hope that all will end well at last.

PRAYER POINT:  Lord, help me to keep trusting you in all my endeavours in Jesus name.

THE LORD IS MY PORTION, SAITH MY SOUL

ANCHOR OF LIFE DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE For FRIDAY, 29TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  THE LORD IS MY PORTION, SAITH MY SOUL

MEMORIZE: “The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.” Lamentation 2:24.

SCRIPTURE READING: Lamentation 2:24-26

“The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. 25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. 26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.”

EXPOSITION:

Jeremiah made a strong confession about God in the midst of his trouble that God is his portion. God is, and ever will be, the all sufficient happiness of his people, those who have chosen him and depend upon him to be such (La 3:24). Who is your portion? Who do you run to in the days of trouble? Who do you praise when you are happy or celebrating success? As for me, The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; that is,

1.  "When I have lost all I have in the world, liberty, and livelihood, and almost life itself, yet I have not lost my interest in God." Portions on earth are perishing things, but God is portion forever.

2.  "While I have an interest in God, therein I have enough; I have that which is sufficient to counterbalance all my troubles and make up all my losses." Whatever we are robbed of, our portion is safe.

3.  "This is that which I depend upon and rest satisfied with: Therefore will I hope in him. I will stay myself upon him, and encourage myself in him, when all other supports and encouragements fail me."

Note, It is our duty to make God the portion of our souls, and then to make use of him as our portion and to take the comfort of it in the midst of our lamentations.

PRAYER POINT: Lord Jesus, I declare You to be my portion now and always in Jesus name.

GOD'S COMPASSIONS FAIL NOT

THURSDAY, 28TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  GOD'S COMPASSIONS FAIL NOT

MEMORIZE: “It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.” Lamentation 2:22

SCRIPTURE READING: Lamentation 2:21-24

“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. 22 It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. 24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.”

EXPOSITION:

The compassion of God never fails, even in the depth of the affliction of His people, they still have experience of the tenderness of the divine pity and the truth of the divine promise. Though they had several times complained that God had not pitied them as claimed in Lamentation 2:17,21 “And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace: I forgat prosperity. This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.”, But in verse 22-23, they correct themselves, and declare,

1. THAT GOD'S COMPASSIONS FAIL NOT; they do not really fail, no, not even when in anger he seems to have shut up his tender mercies. These rivers of mercy run fully and constantly, but never run dry. No. The secret of NEVER-RUN-DRY fountain of His mercy is that they are new every morning; every morning we have fresh instances of God's compassion towards us; he visits us with them every morning (Job 7:18 “And that thou shouldest visit him every morning, and try him every moment?”); every morning does he bring his judgment to light, Zephaniah 3:5 “The just LORD is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; but the unjust knoweth no shame.”. When our comforts fail, yet God's compassions do not.

2. THAT GREAT IS HIS FAITHFULNESS. Though the covenant seemed to be broken, they owned that it still continued in full force; and, though Jerusalem be in ruins, the truth of the Lord endures forever. Note, Whatever hard things we suffer, we must never entertain any hard thoughts of God, but must still be ready to own that he is both kind and faithful.

PRAYER POINT: Lord, open my eyes of faith to see your faithfulness and glory at work in my life and family in Jesus name.

THE INEXHAUSTIBLE COMPASSION OF GOD

WEDNESDAY, 27TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC: THE INEXHAUSTIBLE COMPASSION OF GOD

MEMORIZE: "It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not." Lamentation 3:22.

SCRIPTURE READING: Lamentation 3:21-25.

“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. 22 It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. 24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. 25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.

EXPOSITION:

Let us see what these things are which prophet Jeremiah calls to mind. As bad as things are, it is owing to the mercy of God that they are not worse. We are afflicted either by the rod of his wrath or the attack of the enemy, but it is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, Lamentation 3:22. When we are in distress we should, for the encouragement of our faith and hope, observe what makes for us as well as what makes against us.  Things are bad but they might have been worse, and therefore there is hope that they may be better. Observe here,

1. THE STREAMS OF MERCY ACKNOWLEDGED: WE ARE NOT CONSUMED. Note, The church of God is like Moses's bush, burning, yet not consumed; whatever hardships it has met with, or may meet with, it shall have a being in the world to the end of time. It is persecuted of men, but not forsaken of God, and therefore, though it is cast down, it is not destroyed (2Co 4:9), corrected, yet not consumed, refined in the furnace as silver, but not consumed as dross.

2. THESE STREAMS FOLLOWED UP TO THE FOUNTAIN: IT IS OF THE LORD'S MERCIES. Here are mercies in the plural number, denoting the abundance and variety of those mercies. God is an inexhaustible fountain of mercy, the Father of mercies. Note, We all owe it to the sparing mercy of God that we are not consumed. Others have been consumed round about us, and we ourselves have been in the consuming, and yet we are not consumed; we are out of the grave; we are out of hell.  Had we been dealt with according to our sins, we should have been consumed long ago; but we have been dealt with according to God's mercies, and we are bound to acknowledge it to his praise.

PRAYER POINT: LORD, I receive grace to dwell in your mercy all the days of my life in Jesus name.

GOD IS THE KING OF SAINTS – Part 2

TUESDAY, 26TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  GOD IS THE KING OF SAINTS – Part 2

MEMORIZE: “The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge.” Psalm 46:11.

SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 46:10-11.

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge.”

EXPOSITION:

God is the King of Saints for his people's safety and protection. He triumphs in the former: I will be exalted; they triumph in this, Ps 46:7 and again Ps 46:11.  It is the burden of the song, "The Lord of hosts is with us. It means, he is on our side, he takes our part, is present with us and president over us; the God of Jacob is our refuge, to whom we may flee, and in whom we may confide and be sure of safety."

Let all believers triumph in this.

(1.) THEY HAVE THE PRESENCE OF A GOD OF POWER, OF ALL POWER: The Lord of hosts is with us. God is the Lord of hosts, for he has all the creatures which are called the hosts of heaven and earth at his beck and command, and he makes what use he pleases of them, as the instruments either of his justice or of his mercy.  This sovereign Lord is with us, sides with us, acts with us, and has promised he will never leave us. Hosts may be against us, but we need not fear them if the Lord of hosts be with us.

(2.) THEY ARE UNDER THE PROTECTION OF A GOD IN COVENANT, Who not only is able to help them, but is engaged in honour and faithfulness to help them.  He is the God of Jacob, not only Jacob the person, but Jacob the people; nay, and of all praying people, the spiritual seed of wrestling Jacob; and he is our refuge, by whom we are sheltered and in whom we are satisfied, who by his providence secures our welfare when without are fightings, and who by his grace quiets our minds, and establishes them, when within are fears. The Lord of hosts, the God of Jacob, has been, is, and will be with us--has been, is and will be our refuge: the original includes all. Mark this, and take the comfort of it, and say, If God be for us, who can be against us?

PRAYER POINT:  Lord, You are my King, protect my and mine from all evils In Jesus Name.

GOD IS THE KING OF SAINTS - Part 1

ANCHOR OF LIFE DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE For MONDAY, 25TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  GOD IS THE KING OF SAINTS – Part 1

MEMORIZE: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! 11 The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge.” Psalm 46:10-11.

SCRIPTURE READING: Revelation 15:3-4.

“They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying: "Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God Almighty! Just and true are Your ways, O King of the saints! 4 Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy. For all nations shall come and worship before You, For Your judgments have been manifested."”

EXPOSITION:

As King of saints, and as such we must own that great and marvellous are his works, Revelation 15:3 “They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying: "Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God Almighty! Just and true are Your ways, O King of the saints!” He does and will do great things, For his own glory (Ps 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”): Be still, and know that I am God.

(1.) Let his enemies be still, and threaten no more, but know it, to their terror, that he is God, one infinitely above them, and that will certainly be too hard for them; let them rage no more, for it is all in vain: he that sits in heaven, laughs at them; and, in spite of all their impotent malice against his name and honour, he will be exalted among the heathen and not merely among his own people, he will be exalted in the earth and not merely in the church. Men will set up themselves, will have their own way and do their own will; but let them know that God will be exalted, he will have his way will do his own will, will glorify his own name, and wherein they deal proudly he will be above them, and make them know that he is so.

(2.) Let his own people be still; let them be calm and sedate, and tremble no more, but know, to their comfort, that the Lord is God, he is God alone, and will be exalted above the heathen; let him alone to maintain his honour, to fulfil his own counsels and to support his own interest in the world. Though we be depressed, yet let us not be dejected, for we are sure that God will be exalted, and that may satisfy us; he will work for his great name, and then no matter what becomes of our little names. When we pray, Father, glorify thy name, we ought to exercise faith upon the answer given to that prayer when Christ himself prayed it, I have both glorified it and I will glorify it yet again. Amen, Lord, so be it.

PRAYER POINT:  Lord, calm every storm of life facing me In Jesus Name.

GOD IS THE KING OF NATIONS - Part 3

 SUNDAY, 24TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  GOD IS THE KING OF NATIONS – Part 3

WHEN HE PLEASES TO SHEATHE HIS SWORD, HE PUTS AN END TO THE WARS OF THE NATIONS

MEMORIZE: “But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King. At His wrath the earth will tremble, And the nations will not be able to endure His indignation.” Jeremiah 10:10.

SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 46:6-11.

“The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted. 7 The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. 8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, Who has made desolations in the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire. 10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! 11 The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge.”

EXPOSITION:

When God pleases to sheathe his sword, he puts an end to the wars of the nations and crowns them with peace, Psalm 46:9 “He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire.”. War and peace depend on his word and will, as much as storms and calms at sea do, Psalm 107:25, 29 “For He commands and raises the stormy wind, Which lifts up the waves of the sea. 29 He calms the storm, So that its waves are still.”. He makes wars to cease unto the end of the earth, sometimes in pity to the nations, that they may have a breathing-time, when, by long wars with each other, they have run themselves out of breadth. Both sides perhaps are weary of the war, and willing to let it fall; expedients are found out for accommodation; martial princes are removed, and peace-makers set in their room; and then the bow is broken by consent, the spear cut asunder and turned into a pruning-hook, the sword beaten into a ploughshare, and the chariots of war are burned, there being no more occasion for them; or, rather, it may be meant of what he does, at other times, in favour of his own people. He makes those wars to cease that were waged against them and designed for their ruin. He breaks the enemies' bow that was drawn against them. No weapon formed against Zion shall prosper, Isaiah 54:17 “No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their righteousness is from Me," Says the LORD.”

The total destruction of Gog and Magog is prophetically described by the burning of their weapons of war (Ezekiel 39:9-10 “Then those who dwell in the cities of Israel will go out and set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and bucklers, the bows and arrows, the javelins and spears; and they will make fires with them for seven years. 10 "They will not take wood from the field nor cut down any from the forests, because they will make fires with the weapons; and they will plunder those who plundered them, and pillage those who pillaged them," says the Lord GOD.”), which intimates likewise the church's perfect security and assurance of lasting peace, which made it needless to lay up those weapons of war for their own service. The bringing of a long war to a good issue is a work of the Lord, which we ought to behold with wonder and thankfulness.

PRAYER POINT:  Lord, let there be peace unto me and my household according to your Word In Jesus Name.

GOD IS THE KINGS OF NATIONS - Part 2

SATURDAY, 23RD SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  GOD IS THE KING OF NATIONS – Part 2

WHEN HE PLEASES TO DRAW HIS SWORD AND GIVE IT COMMISSION

MEMORIZE: “Inasmuch as there is none like You, O LORD (You are great, and Your name is great in might), 7 Who would not fear You, O King of the nations? For this is Your rightful due. For among all the wise men of the nations, And in all their kingdoms, There is none like You.” Jeremiah 10:6-7.

EXPOSITION:

When he pleases to draw his sword, and give it commission, he can make great havoc among the nations and lay all waste (Psalm 46:8 “Come, behold the works of the LORD, Who has made desolations in the earth.”): Come, behold the works of the Lord; they are to be observed (Psalm 66:5 “Come and see the works of God; He is awesome in His doing toward the sons of men.”), and to be sought out, Psalm 111:2 “The works of the LORD are great, Studied by all who have pleasure in them.”. All the operations of Providence must be considered as the works of the Lord, and his attributes and purposes must be taken notice of in them.  Particularly take notice of the desolations he has made in the earth, among the enemies of his church, who thought to lay the land of Israel desolate. The destruction they designed to bring upon the church has been turned upon themselves.

War is a tragedy which commonly destroys the stage it is acted on; David carried the war into the enemies' country; and O what desolations did it make there! Cities were burnt, countries laid waste, and armies of men cut off and laid in heaps upon heaps. Come and see the effects of desolating judgments, and stand in awe of God; say, How terrible art thou in thy works! Psalm 66:3 “Say to God, "How awesome are Your works! Through the greatness of Your power Your enemies shall submit themselves to You.”. Let all that oppose him see this with terror, and expect the same cup of trembling to be put into their hands; let all that fear him and trust in him see it with pleasure, and not be afraid of the most formidable powers armed against the church. Let them gird themselves, but they shall be broken to pieces.

PRAYER POINT:  Lord, fight for me and give me victory as your son/daughter In Jesus Name.

EXPOSITION:

Psalm 46:6-11 give glory to God both as King of nations and as King of saints. Today, we want to examine God as the King of nations.

As King of nations, ruling the world by his power and providence, and overruling all the affairs of the children of men to his own glory; he does according to his will among the inhabitants of the earth, and none may say, What doest thou?

As King of nations He checks the rage and breaks the power of the nations that oppose him and his interests in the world (Psalm 46:6 “The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted.”): The heathen raged at David's coming to the throne, and at the setting up of the kingdom of the Son of David; compare Psalm 2:1-2 “Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the LORD and against His Anointed,…”.

The kingdoms were moved with indignation, and rose in a tumultuous furious manner to oppose it; but God uttered his voice, spoke to them in his wrath, and they were moved in another sense, they were struck into confusion and consternation, put into disorder, and all their measures broken; the earth itself melted under them, so that they found no firm footing; their earthly hearts failed them for fear, and dissolved like snow before the sun. Such a melting of the spirits of the enemies is described, Judges 5:4-5 “LORD, when You went out from Seir, When You marched from the field of Edom, The earth trembled and the heavens poured, The clouds also poured water; 5 The mountains gushed before the LORD, This Sinai, before the LORD God of Israel.”; and Luke 21:25-26 “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26 "men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of heaven will be shaken.”.

ACTION POINT:  Appreciate God for being there for you as the King of nations to defend and bless you.

RESPONSIBILITY TO THE GOVERNMENT

THURSDAY, 21ST SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  RESPONSIBILITY TO THE GOVERNMENT

MEMORIZE: “1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.”

SCRIPTURE READING: Romans 13:1-8.

“1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. 4 For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. 5. Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience' sake. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God's ministers attending continually to this very thing. 7 ¶ Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor. 8 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.”

EXPOSITION:

All government is ordained of God. Our duty to pay taxes and honor authority is commanded by our Lord Jesus Christ, “"Show Me the tax money." So they brought Him a denarius. 20 And He said to them, "Whose image and inscription is this?" 21 They said to Him, "Caesar's." And He said to them, "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."”  Matthew 22:19-21. Render to Caesar his own and to God His own. “Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience' sake. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God's ministers attending continually to this very thing. 7 ¶ Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor. 8 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.” Romans 13:5-8. For conscience’ sake, we are to pay taxes and honor the state authorities.

Be subject to principalities and powers.  “Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, 2 to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men. 3 For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another.” Titus 3:1-3.

Submit to every ordinance of man, and honor the king -  “Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake, whether to the king as supreme, 14 or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. 17 Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.” 1 Peter 2:13,14, 17.

WHEN NOT TO OBEY

We ought to obey God rather than man. “But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: "We ought to obey God rather than men.” Acts 5:29.

Obedience to God overruled the forced worship of Nebuchadnezzar’s image - “"If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. "But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.” Daniel 3:17, 18.

As Christ’s followers, we cannot take part in any political activity, war, rebellion, the shedding of blood nor work in munitions, missile or bomber factories, or any occupation in support of the military effort. “We have men placed over us for rulers, and laws to govern the people. Were it not for these laws, the condition of the world would be worse than it is now. some of these laws are good, others are bad. the bad have been increasing, and we are yet to be brought into strait places. But God will sustain His people in being firm and living up to the principles of His word. When the laws of men conflict with the word and law of God, we are to obey God, whatever the consequences may be.

PRAYER POINT:  Lord, I choose to obey and honour you no matter the situation or consequence In Jesus Name.

THE WONDERS OF GRACE

Wednesday, 20TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  THE WONDERS OF GRACE

MEMORISE: “The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee.” Numbers 6:25.

SCRIPTURE READING: Ephesians 2:8-10

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

EXPOSITION:

Grace is God’s free and underserved favour. Grace is God’s life transforming gift of His favour to those who do not deserve it. The gift of salvation and forgiveness of sins is available for all who through faith accept His grace revealed in Jesus Christ, but so many miss the gift because they rely on themselves and try to earn grace by keeping the law.

God’s grace also supplies us with everything we need for daily life, and to that end he invites us to come to him with our needs to a limited extent, even the wicked receive blessings from God’s grace.

1. Grace appears in the blessing God asked Aaron to be blessing the children of Israel with everyday of their life. Numbers 6:22-26 says “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them, The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”

2. Salvation is by grace – “When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.” Acts 11:18

3. Salvation received by faith – “And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.” Gen. 15:6.

4. Salvation is not by work – “Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the LORD thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee. 5 Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 6 Understand therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.” Deut. 9:4-6.

5. Grace needed for each day – “For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.”  Psalm 84:11

6. Grace is even given for the wicked to repent and be blessed – “Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the LORD.” Isaiah 26:10.

PRAYER POINT: Celebrate the grace of God you are enjoying in your daily living and thank God for it.

GOD OF VENGEANCE

TUESDAY, 19TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  GOD OF VENGEANCE

MEMORIZE: "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord.” Romans 12:19;

SCRIPTURE READING: PSALM 94:1-11.

“O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongs-O God, to whom vengeance belongs, shine forth! 2 Rise up, O Judge of the earth; Render punishment to the proud. 3 LORD, how long will the wicked, How long will the wicked triumph? 4 They utter speech, and speak insolent things; All the workers of iniquity boast in themselves. 5 They break in pieces Your people, O LORD, And afflict Your heritage. 6 They slay the widow and the stranger, And murder the fatherless. 7 Yet they say, "The LORD does not see, Nor does the God of Jacob understand." 8 Understand, you senseless among the people; And you fools, when will you be wise? 9 He who planted the ear, shall He not hear? He who formed the eye, shall He not see? 10 He who instructs the nations, shall He not correct, He who teaches man knowledge? 11 The LORD knows the thoughts of man, That they are futile.”

EXPOSITION:

This psalm (psalm 94) was penned when the people of God (Israel) was oppressed and persecuted; and it is an appeal to God, as the Judge of heaven and earth, and an address to him, to appear for his people against his and their enemies. Two things this psalm speaks:--

  I. Conviction and terror to the persecutors Psalm 94:1-11, showing them their danger and folly, and arguing with them.

II. Comfort and peace to the persecuted Psalm 94:12-23, assuring them, both from God's promise and from the psalmist's own experience, that their troubles would end well, and God would, in due time, appear to their joy and the confusion of those who set themselves against them.  In singing this psalm we must look abroad upon the pride of oppressors with a holy indignation, and the tears of the oppressed with a holy compassion; but, at the same time, look upwards to the righteous Judge with an entire satisfaction, and look forward, to the end of all these things, with a pleasing hope.

In Psalm 94:1-11, we have a solemn appeal to God against the cruel oppressors of his people, Ps 94:1-2. This speaks terror enough to them, that they have the prayers of God's people against them, who cry day and night to him to avenge them of their adversaries; and shall he not avenge them speedily? Luke 18:3,7 “"Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, 'Get justice for me from my adversary.' 7 "And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them?”.

Observe here,

THE TITLES THEY GIVE TO GOD FOR THE ENCOURAGING OF THEIR FAITH IN THIS APPEAL:

O God! to whom vengeance belongeth; Thou Judge of the earth. We may with boldness appeal to him; for,

(a.) He is judge, supreme judge, judge alone, from whom every man's judgment proceeds. He that gives law gives sentence upon every man according to his works, by the rule of that law. He has prepared his throne for judgment. He has indeed appointed magistrates to be avengers under him Romans 13:4, but he is the avenger in chief, to whom even magistrates themselves are accountable; his throne is the last refuge for the oppressed innocents. He is universal judge, not of this city or country only, but the Judge of the earth, of the whole earth: none are exempt from his jurisdiction; nor can it be alleged against an appeal to him in any court that it is before a person not judicially qualified.

(b.) He is just. As he has authority to avenge wrong, so it is his nature, and property, and honour.  This also is implied in the title here given to him and repeated with such an emphasis, O God! to whom vengeance belongs, who will not suffer might always to prevail against right. This is a good reason why we must not avenge ourselves, because God has said, Vengeance is mine; and it is daring presumption to usurp his prerogative and step into his throne, Ro 12:19. Let this alarm those who do wrong, whether with a close hand, so as not to be discovered, or with a high hand, so as not to be controlled, There is a God to whom vengeance belongs, who will certainly call them to an account; and let it encourage those who suffer wrong to bear it with silence, committing themselves to him who judges righteously.

WHAT THEY ASK OF GOD.

(1.) That He Would Glorify Himself, And Get Honour To His Own Name. Wicked persecutors thought God had withdrawn and had forsaken the earth. "Lord," say they, "show thyself; make them know that thou art and that thou art ready to show thyself strong on the behalf of those whose hearts are upright with thee." The enemies thought God was conquered because his people were. "Lord," say they, "lift up thyself, be thou exalted in thy own strength. Lift up thyself, to be seen, to be feared; and suffer not thy name to be trampled upon and run down."

(2.) That He Would Mortify The Oppressors: Render a reward to the proud; that is, "Reckon with them for all their insolence, and the injuries they have done to thy people." These prayers are prophecies, which speak terror to all the sons of violence. The righteous God will deal with them according to their merits.

PRAYER POINT:  Lord, fight for me and give me victory over the forces of the enemies In Jesus Name.

I DELIGHT TO DO THY WILL, O MY GOD!

MONDAY, 18TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  I DELIGHT TO DO THY WILL, O MY GOD!

MEMORIZE: “I delight to do Your will, O my God, And Your law is within my heart.”  Psalm 40:8.

SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 40:8-10.

“8 I delight to do Your will, O my God, And Your law is within my heart." 9 I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness In the great assembly; Indeed, I do not restrain my lips, O LORD, You Yourself know. 10 I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have declared Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth From the great assembly.”

EXPOSITION:

To delight is to have joy in who you are or what you have or in what you are doing or things someone is doing around you. Doing the will of God should be the foremost priority of every believer. We are saved to do God’s will. Though on several occasions, His will might collide with ours, yet in such situation, we must learn to say, “Thy will be done, o Lord”. Jesus Christ, our Lord, having freely offered himself to die for the sins of the world, according to the will of His Father, he did not fail, nor was discouraged, but proceeded with all possible satisfaction to himself (Ps 40:8,9): “I delight to do thy will, O my God!”

To Christ, his meat and drink is to go on with the work of His Father, as appointed to him (John 4:34 “Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.”); and the reason here given is, “Thy law is within my heart.” It is written there, it rules there, it is an active commanding principle there. It is meant of the law concerning the work and office of the Mediator, what he was to do and suffer; this law was dear to him and had an influence upon him in his whole undertaking.

Note, When the law of God is written in our hearts our duty will be our delight. There will be no murmuring, no grumbling and no ill-complain when we are doing what we delight in. As believers, we must find pleasure in doing the will of God. It calls for our total dedication and obedience. And at the end, it usually attracts God’s blessings.

PRAYER POINT:  Lord, I receive grace to delight in your will and law In Jesus Name.

HEALTHFUL LIVING

SUNDAY, 17TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC: HEALTHFUL LIVING

MEMORIZE: “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31.

SCRIPTURE READING: 1 Timothy 2:9, 10

““In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.”

EXPOSITION:

Natural healing–natural living is God’s preventive medicine living according to the laws of nature and obtaining the eight essentials of good health listed above will prevent a vast amount of illness. When these laws are violated or when illness overtakes us, we should rely primarily on the natural remedies God has provided – such as: water for internal and external cleanliness, rest for regaining strength and for giving the body resistance, herbal teas, a light diet, fresh air, exercise, and other natural means.

Dress–modesty and propriety are the rules of humility and love 1 Corinthians 10:31 “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” Whatever is done includes how we dress. This principle applies to both men and women. at all times our apparel should be healthful and an honor to God. “A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman's garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the LORD your God.” Deuteronomy 22:5. Women should not wear men’s clothing, nor should men wear women’s clothing.

Modesty will guide our choice of apparel.  “In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.” 1 Timothy 2:9, 10. Articles of clothing to be avoided include: dresses which do not cover the knees while standing or sitting and also the other extreme, those that trail on the floor, low necklines, low backs, sleeveless clothing, transparent materials, tight apparel, and unhealthful and ill-fitting footwear. Following fashion is a fruitless endeavor. “Do not let your adornment be merely outward--arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel-- rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands,” 1 Peter 3:3-5.

Simplicity and godliness are beautiful in God’s sight. Thus, the Christian will avoid jewelry and loud, showy apparel. “Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith?” Luke 12:27-28. The flowers are a good example of the beauty God loves. “Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him? But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering.” 1 Corinthians 11:14, 15. The Lord intends there to be a clear distinction between men and women. “Daughters of the heavenly King, members of the royal family, will feel a burden of responsibility to attain to a higher life, that they may be brought into close connection with heaven and work in unison with the Redeemer of the world.

Those who are engaged in this work will not be satisfied with the fashions and follies which absorb the mind and affections of women in these last days. If they are indeed the daughters of God, they will be partakers of the divine nature. they will be stirred with deepest pity, as was their divine Redeemer, as they see the corrupting influences in society. They will be in sympathy with Christ, and in their sphere, as they have ability and opportunity, will work to save perishing souls as Christ worked in His exalted sphere for the benefit of man.

PRAYER POINT:  Lord, help your Church to remain on the track of Christian healthy living In Jesus Name.

ii. Lord, restore the backsliders back to you and save the unsaved souls in Jesus name.

JESUS TAKES OUR SINS TO THE CROSS

SATURDAY, 16TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC: JESUS TAKES OUR SIN TO THE CROSS

MEMORIZE: "Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again." John 10:17.

SCRIPTURE READING: John 10:17-18.

"Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. 18 "No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father."

EXPOSITION:

Jesus Christ takes off the sins of humanity to the cross, which to many is a stone of stumbling, by four considerations:--

[a.] That his laying down his life for the sheep was the condition, the performance of which entitled him to the honours and powers of his exalted state John 10:17: "Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life. Upon these terms I am, as Mediator, to expect my Father's acceptance and approbation, and the glory designed me--that I become a sacrifice for the chosen remnant." Not but that, as the Son of God, he was beloved of his Father from eternity, but as God-man, as Immanuel, he was therefore beloved of the Father because he undertook to die for the sheep; therefore God's soul delighted in him as his elect because herein he was his faithful servant Isa 42:1; therefore he said, This is my beloved Son. What an instance is this of God's love to man, that he loved his Son the more for loving us! See what a value Christ puts upon his Father's love, that, to recommend himself to that, he would lay down his life for the sheep. Did he think God's love recompence sufficient for all his services and sufferings, and shall we think it too little for ours, and court the smiles of the world to make it up?  Therefore doth my Father love me, that is, me, and all that by faith become one with me; me, and the mystical body, because I lay down my life.

[b.] That his laying down his life was in order to his resuming it: I lay down my life, that I may receive it again. First, This was the effect of his Father's love, and the first step of his exaltation, the fruit of that love. Because he was God's holy one, he must not see corruption, Ps 16:10. God loved him too well to leave him in the grave. Secondly, This he had in his eye, in laying down his life, that he might have an opportunity of declaring himself to be the Son of God with power by his resurrection, Ro 1:4. By a divine stratagem (like that before Ai, Jos 8:15) he yielded to death, as if he were smitten before it, that he might the more gloriously conquer death, and triumph over the grave. He laid down a vilified body, that he might assume a glorified one, fit to ascend to the world of spirits; laid down a life adapted to this world, but assumed one adapted to the other, like a corn of wheat, Joh 12:24.

[c.] That he was perfectly voluntary in his sufferings and death John 10:18: "No one doth or can force my life from me against my will, but I freely lay it down of myself, I deliver it as my own act and deed, for I have (which no man has) power to lay it down, and to take it again."

[d.] That he did all this by the express order and appointment of his Father, into which he ultimately resolves the whole affair: This commandment have I received of my Father; not such a commandment as made what he did necessary, prior to his own voluntary undertaking; but this was the law of mediation, which he was willing to have written in his heart, so as to delight in doing the will of God according to it, Ps 40:8.

PRAYER POINT:  Lord, Thank you for our redemption In Jesus Name.

• Simon and Levi – “Now it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and came boldly upon the city and killed all the males. And they killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem's house, and went out” Genesis 34:25-26.

• Samson - “Samson said to them, "Since you would do a thing like this, I will surely take revenge on you, and after that I will cease." 8 So he attacked them hip and thigh with a great slaughter; then he went down and dwelt in the cleft of the rock of Etam.” Judges 15:7,8;

“Then Samson called to the LORD, saying, "O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray! Strengthen me, I pray, just this once, O God, that I may with one blow take vengeance on the Philistines for my two eyes!" 29 And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars which supported the temple, and he braced himself against them, one on his right and the other on his left. 30 Then Samson said, "Let me die with the Philistines!" And he pushed with all his might, and the temple fell on the lords and all the people who were in it. So the dead that he killed at his death were more than he had killed in his life.” 16:28-30

• Joab – “Now when Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him privately, and there stabbed him in the stomach, so that he died for the blood of Asahel his brother.” 2 Samuel 3:27

• Absalom – “And it came to pass, after two full years, that Absalom had sheepshearers in Baal Hazor, which is near Ephraim; so Absalom invited all the king's sons. 24 Then Absalom came to the king and said, "Kindly note, your servant has sheepshearers; please, let the king and his servants go with your servant." 25 But the king said to Absalom, "No, my son, let us not all go now, lest we be a burden to you." Then he urged him, but he would not go; and he blessed him. 26 Then Absalom said, "If not, please let my brother Amnon go with us." And the king said to him, "Why should he go with you?" 27 But Absalom urged him; so he let Amnon and all the king's sons go with him. 28 Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, "Watch now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, 'Strike Amnon!' then kill him. Do not be afraid. Have I not commanded you? Be courageous and valiant." 29 So the servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king's sons arose, and each one got on his mule and fled.” 2 Samuel 13:23-29

• Jezebel – “Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.” 1 Kings 19:2

• Ahab – “So the king of Israel said, "Take Micaiah, and return him to Amon the governor of the city and to Joash the king's son; 27 "and say, 'Thus says the king: "Put this fellow in prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and water of affliction, until I come in peace."'"” 1 Kings 22:26-27.

• Haman - “Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus, "There is a certain people scattered and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of your kingdom; their laws are different from all other people's, and they do not keep the king's laws. Therefore it is not fitting for the king to let them remain. 9 "If it pleases the king, let a decree be written that they be destroyed, and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver into the hands of those who do the work, to bring it into the king's treasuries." 10 So the king took his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews. 11 And the king said to Haman, "The money and the people are given to you, to do with them as seems good to you." 12 Then the king's scribes were called on the thirteenth day of the first month, and a decree was written according to all that Haman commanded-to the king's satraps, to the governors who were over each province, to the officials of all people, to every province according to its script, and to every people in their language. In the name of King Ahasuerus it was written, and sealed with the king's signet ring. 13 And the letters were sent by couriers into all the king's provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate all the Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar, and to plunder their possessions. 14 A copy of the document was to be issued as law in every province, being published for all people, that they should be ready for that day. 15 The couriers went out, hastened by the king's command; and the decree was proclaimed in Shushan the citadel. So the king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Shushan was perplexed.” Esther 3:8-15

• Edomites – “Thus says the Lord GOD: "Because of what Edom did against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has greatly offended by avenging itself on them,” Ezekiel 25:12

• Philistines - “Thus says the Lord GOD: "Because the Philistines dealt vengefully and took vengeance with a spiteful heart, to destroy because of the old hatred.” Ezekiel 25:15

• Herodias - “Therefore Herodias held it against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not; 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he protected him. And when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly. 21 Then an opportune day came when Herod on his birthday gave a feast for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee. 22 And when Herodias' daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl, "Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you." 23 He also swore to her, "Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom." 24 So she went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist!" 25 Immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter." 26 And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he did not want to refuse her.” Mark 6:19-26.

• James and John - “And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?"” Luke 9:54

• Chief priests - “When they heard this, they were furious and plotted to kill them.” Acts 5:33

• Jews - “When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth. 59 And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."” Acts 7:54,59;

“And when it was day, some of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under an oath, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.” Acts 23:12.

PRAYER POINT:  Lord, deliver me from the spirit of vengeance and bitterness In Jesus Name.

SCRIPTURE READING: Ezekiel 25:15-17;

THE WICKED ARE EARNEST AFTER REVENGE

PUNISHMENT FOR REVENGE

“Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, Because he pursued his brother with the sword, And cast off all pity; His anger tore perpetually, And he kept his wrath forever. 12 But I will send a fire upon Teman, Which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.”” Amos 1:11,12

GOD’S WORD ON REVENGE

WEDNESDAY, 13TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC: GOD’S WORD ON REVENGE

MEMORIZE: “Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord.” Romans 12:17-19;

SCRIPTURE READING: 1 Samuel 25:24-31.

“So she fell at his feet and said: "On me, my lord, on me let this iniquity be! And please let your maidservant speak in your ears, and hear the words of your maidservant. 25 "Please, let not my lord regard this scoundrel Nabal. For as his name is, so is he: Nabal is his name, and folly is with him. But I, your maidservant, did not see the young men of my lord whom you sent. 26 "Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, since the LORD has held you back from coming to bloodshed and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now then, let your enemies and those who seek harm for my lord be as Nabal. 27 "And now this present which your maidservant has brought to my lord, let it be given to the young men who follow my lord. 28 "Please forgive the trespass of your maidservant. For the LORD will certainly make for my lord an enduring house, because my lord fights the battles of the LORD, and evil is not found in you throughout your days. 29 "Yet a man has risen to pursue you and seek your life, but the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living with the LORD your God; and the lives of your enemies He shall sling out, as from the pocket of a sling. 30 "And it shall come to pass, when the LORD has done for my lord according to all the good that He has spoken concerning you, and has appointed you ruler over Israel, 31 "that this will be no grief to you, nor offense of heart to my lord, either that you have shed blood without cause, or that my lord has avenged himself. But when the LORD has dealt well with my lord, then remember your maidservant."”

EXPOSITION:

Revenge is the action taken in return for an injury or offense. It is forbidden by our Lord. Every offense committed against human has any of these two effects. 1. Recoverable damage which with time one can be healed from its injury. 2. Irrecoverable damage: This is the damage sustained that time cannot heal except for divine intervention.

Vengeance is usually thought of when people offend us, most especially, when we have irrecoverable injury. Notwithstanding, God warned us not to take vengeance by ourselves but to leave it unto Him. “'You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.” Leviticus 19:18;

“Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles; Do not say, "I will do to him just as he has done to me; I will render to the man according to his work.” Proverbs 24:17,29.

“See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.” 1 Thessalonians 5:15;

“not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.” 1 Peter 3:9

CHRIST AN EXAMPLE OF FORBEARING

“He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.” Isaiah 53:7;

“who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously” 1 Peter 2:23

REVENGE IS REBUKED BY CHRIST

“And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?" 55 But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.” Luke 9:54-55.

PROCEEDS FROM A SPITEFUL HEART

“Thus says the Lord GOD: "Because the Philistines dealt vengefully and took vengeance with a spiteful heart, to destroy because of the old hatred,” Ezekiel 25:15

INSTEAD OF TAKING REVENGE, WE SHOULD

• Trust in God - Proverbs 20:22; Ro 12:16

• Exhibit love - Leviticus 19:18; Luke 6:35

• Give place to wrath - Rom 12:19

• Exercise forbearance - Mt 5:38-41

• Bless - Rom 12:14

• Overcome others by kindness - Proverbs 25:21,22; Rom. 12:20

PRAYER POINT:  Lord, I handover my battles unto you, fight for me and prevent me from revenge In Jesus Name.

FORGIVENESS – Part 3

TUESDAY, 12TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  FORGIVENESS – Part 3

MEMORIZE: “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” Matthew 6:14.

SCRIPTURE READING: Luke 6:37

“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven."

EXPOSITION:

PROMISES TO THOSE WHO FORGIVE OTHERS.

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” Matthew 6:14;

“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” Luke 6:37

NO FORGIVENESS WITHOUT FORGIVING OTHERS

“But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Matthew 6:15; “” James 2:13

FORGIVENESS IS ILLUSTRATED IN Matthew 18:23-35

“Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 "And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 "But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made. 26 "The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, 'Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.' 27 "Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt. 28 "But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, 'Pay me what you owe!' 29 "So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.' 30 "And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay the debt. 31 "So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done. 32 "Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. 33 'Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?' 34 "And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. 35 "So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses."

FORGIVENESS OR REVENGE – Part 1

SUNDAY, 10TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  FORGIVENESS OR REVENGE – Part 1

MEMORIZE: “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. "But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Matthew 6:14-15.

SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew 18:23-35

EXPOSITION:

Forgiveness of sin is one of the constituent parts of justification. In pardoning sin, God absolves the sinner from the condemnation of the law, and that on account of the work of Christ, i.e., he removes the guilt of sin, or the sinner's actual liability to eternal wrath on account of it. All sins are forgiven freely (Acts 5:31; 13:38; 1 John 1:6-9). The sinner is by this act of grace forever freed from the guilt and penalty of his sins. This is the peculiar prerogative of God (Ps. 130:4; Mark 2:5). It is offered to all in the gospel.

CHRIST SET AN EXAMPLE OF FORGIVENESS

“Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do." And they divided His garments and cast lots.” Luke 23:34

JESUS COMMANDED FORGIVENESS

“And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.”  Mark 11:25;

“Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord.” Romans 12:19

FORGIVENESS IS TO BE UNLIMITED

“Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.”  Matthew 18:22;

“And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, 'I repent,' you shall forgive him.”  Luke 17:4

FORGIVENESS IS A CHARACTERISTIC OF SAINTS

“If I have repaid evil to him who was at peace with me, Or have plundered my enemy without cause.” Psalm 7:4

PRAYER POINT:  Lord, help us to be like you in forgiving others In Jesus Name.

DO NOT FRET BECAUSE OF EVILDOERS

SATURDAY, 9TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  DO NOT FRET BECAUSE OF EVILDOERS

MEMORIZE: “Do not fret because of evildoers, Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.”  Psalm 37:1.

SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 37:1-5.

“Do not fret because of evildoers, Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. 2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, And wither as the green herb. 3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.”

EXPOSITION

We are here cautioned against discontent at the prosperity and success of evil-doers (Ps 37:1-2): Fret not thyself, neither be thou envious. We may suppose that David speaks this to himself first, and preaches it to his own heart (in his communing with that upon his bed), for the suppressing of those corrupt passions which he found working there, and then leaves it in writing for instruction to others that might be in similar temptation. That is preached best, and with most probability of success, to others, which is first preached to ourselves. Look at it this way,

1. WHEN WE LOOK ABROAD WE SEE THE WORLD FULL OF EVIL-DOERS AND WORKERS OF INIQUITY, that flourish and prosper, that have what they will and do what they will, that live in ease and pomp themselves and have power in their hands to do mischief to those about them. So it was in David's time; and therefore, if it is so still, let us not marvel at the matter, as though it were some new or strange thing.

2. WHEN WE LOOK WITHIN WE FIND OURSELVES TEMPTED TO FRET AT THIS, and to be envious against these scandals and burdens, these blemishes and common nuisances, of this earth. We are apt to fret at God, as if he were unkind to the world and unkind to his church in permitting such men to live, and prosper, and prevail, as they do. We are apt to fret ourselves with vexation at their success in their evil projects. We are apt to envy them the liberty they take in getting wealth, and perhaps by unlawful means, and in the indulgence of their lusts, and to wish that we could shake off the restraints of conscience and do so too. We are tempted to think them the only happy people, and to incline to imitate them, and to join ourselves with them, that we may share in their gains and eat of their dainties; and this is that which we are warned against: Fret not thyself, neither be thou envious. Fretfulness and envy are sins that are their own punishments; they are the uneasiness of the spirit and the rottenness of the bones; it is therefore in kindness to ourselves that we are warned against them. Yet that is not all; for,

3. WHEN WE LOOK FORWARD WITH AN EYE OF FAITH WE SHALL SEE NO REASON TO ENVY WICKED PEOPLE THEIR PROSPERITY, for their ruin is at the door and they are ripening apace for it, Ps 37:2. They flourish, but as the grass, and as the green herb, which nobody envies nor frets at. The flourishing of a godly man is like that of a fruitful tree (Ps 1:3), but that of the wicked man is like grass and herbs, which are very short-lived.

(1.) They will soon wither of themselves. Outward prosperity is a fading thing, and so is the life itself to which it is confined.

(2.) They will sooner be cut down by the judgments of God.  Their triumphing is short, but their weeping and wailing will be everlasting.

PRAYER POINT:  Lord, help me to keep trusting you all the days of my life never to fret because the prosperity of the wicked In Jesus Name.

BLESSED IS THE MAN THAT MAKES THE LORD HIS TRUST

FRIDAY, 8TH SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  BLESSED IS THE MAN THAT MAKES THE LORD HIS TRUST

MEMORIZE: “Blessed is that man who makes the LORD his trust, And does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.”  Psalm 40:4

SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 40:1-5.

“I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry. 2 He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps. 3 He has put a new song in my mouth-Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the LORD. 4 Blessed is that man who makes the LORD his trust, And does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. 5 Many, O LORD my God, are Your wonderful works Which You have done; And Your thoughts toward us Cannot be recounted to You in order; If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered.”

EXPOSITION:

Another word for trust is confidence in someone or something. It is to believe that God is worthy to be relied upon. It is to be rest assured that God is faithful to keep all His promises. David's experience would be an encouragement to many to hope in God, and, for that end, he leaves it here upon record: “Many shall see, and fear, and trust in the Lord.” They shall fear the Lord and his justice, which brought David, and the Son of David, into that horrible pit, and shall say, If this be done to the green tree, what shall be done to the dry? They shall fear the Lord and his goodness, in filling the mouth of David, and the Son of David, with new songs of joy and praise.

There is a holy reverent fear of God, which is not only consistent with, but the foundation of our hope in him. They shall not fear him and shun him, but fear him and trust in him in their greatest straits, not doubting but to find him as able and ready to help as David did in his distress. God's dealings with our Lord Jesus are our great encouragement to trust in God; when it pleased the Lord to bruise him, and put him to grief for our sins, he demanded our debt from him; and when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand, he made it to appear that he had accepted the payment he made and was satisfied with it; and what greater encouragement can we have to fear and worship God and to trust in him? See Ro 4:25; Ps 40:1-2. The psalmist invites others to make God their hope, as he did, by pronouncing those happy that do so (Ps 40:4): "Blessed is the man that makes the Lord his trust, and him only (that has great and good thoughts of him, and is entirely devoted to him), and respects not the proud, does not do as those do that trust in themselves, nor depends upon those who proudly encourage others to trust in them; for both the one and the other turn aside to lies, as indeed all those do that turn aside from God."

This is applicable, particularly, to our faith in Christ. Blessed are those that trust in him, and in his righteousness alone, and respect not the proud Pharisees, that set up their own righteousness in competition with that, that will not be governed by their dictates, nor turn aside to lies, with the unbelieving Jews, who submit not to the righteousness of God, Romans 10:3 “For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.”. Blessed are those that escape this temptation.

PRAYER POINT:  Lord, help me to build my trust in you In Jesus Name.
