OUR DUTY TO GOD: PRESENT YOURSELF AN ACCEPTABLE SACRIFICE

SUNDAY, 3RD SEPTEMBER, 2023.

Author: PASTOR DR. SAMUEL AYORINDE

TOPIC:  OUR DUTY TO GOD: PRESENT YOURSELF AN ACCEPTABLE SACRIFICE

MEMORIZE: “And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God.”. 2 Corinthians 8:5.

SCRIPTURE READING: Romans 12:1-2.

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

EXPOSITION:

Concerning our duty to God, we see what is godliness… It is to surrender ourselves to God, and so to lay a good foundation. We must first give our own selves unto the Lord, 2Co 8:5 “And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God.”.  This is here pressed as the spring of all duty and obedience, Romans 12:1-2. Man consists of body and soul, Genesis 2:7; Ecclesiastes 12:7 “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”.

THE BODY MUST BE PRESENTED TO GOD, Romans 12:1.

The body is for the Lord, and the Lord for the body, 1Cor 6:13-14 “Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.”. The exhortation is here introduced very pathetically: I beseech you, brethren.  Though he was a great apostle, yet he calls the meanest Christians brethren, a term of affection and concern. He uses entreaty; this is the gospel way: As though God did beseech you by us, 2 Cor. 5:20 “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.”. Though he might with authority command, yet for love's sake he rather beseeches, Philemon 1:8-9 “Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient, Yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.”.

The poor useth entreaty, Proverbs 18:23 “The poor useth intreaties; but the rich answereth roughly.”. This is to insinuate the exhortation, that it might come with the more pleasing power. Many are sooner wrought upon if they be accosted kindly, are more easily led than driven.

PRAYER POINT:  LORD, I receive grace to present myself acceptable sacrifice to you in Jesus name.
