Topic: DELIVERANCE FROM THE POWER AND EFFECTS OF THORNS

MEMORIZE: “Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress tree, And instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree; And it shall be to the LORD for a name, For an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off." Isaiah 55:13.

SCRIPTURE READING: Genesis 3:17-19. 

“Then to Adam He said, "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': "Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. 18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. 19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return."”

EXPOSITION: 

Sin brought curse, sickness, sorrow and pain. One of the curses placed on man was curse of thorn. Thorn is a symbol of affliction and sorrow. It is a sign of hard labor and wasted efforts. It is a sign of poverty and sickness. A land of thorn is a cursed and unproductive land. In the proverb of sower as told by our Lord Jesus Christ says, “And some (good seed) fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.” Luke 8:7.

The remnants of the Canaanites among the Israelites were reserved and regarded as thorns. Whenever the children of Israel ere from following the Lord, these thorns shall rise against them and choke them until they realize their offense and turn back to God. Judges 2:3 says “Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.”

We thank God for His love that reversed this curse from those who love and trust God. These Scriptures are directly God’s commitment towards our deliverance from curse of thorns and briers.

Isaiah 5:6 “And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.”

Isaiah 7:25“And on all hills that shall be digged with the mattock, there shall not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of lesser cattle.”

Isaiah 10:17  “And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;”

Hebrews 6:8 “But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.” 

PRAYER POINT: i. Lord, deliver me from those who are regarded as thorns in my life in Jesus name.

ii. Lord, take away anything that is called thorns in my life in Jesus name.

iii. Lord, deliver me from the oppression of the wicked in Jesus name.
