Maintaining Military Discipline: Order And Steadfastness
MEMORIZE: “For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.” Colossians 2:5
SCRIPTURE READING: Colossians 2:4-7
““Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words. 5 For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ. 6 As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.”
EXPOSITION:
i. The Word “order” means to maintain military discipline, array and arrangement to hold a solid front to hold the military line unbroken and intact.
ii. The word “steadfastness” means to stand fast and preserved to be immovable, steady and unyielding: to never crack, give-in or backup. This too is a military word. A. T. Robertson says that it is “the solid part of the line which can and does stand the attack” of the seduction.
Note that the believers of the Colossian Church were being attacked by false teaching, even as Paul was writing to them. But they were responding like a victorious army. They were maintaining their discipline, holding their order and standing fast. The Church of today is also under attack of false teaching and false prophets. We must stand firm in the sound doctrine of the word of God – know the truth in order to correct and silence false doctrines parading itself as the word of truth.
Note also the importance of minister’s encouragement: Paul says, that he was with them in spirit, joying and watching them gain the victory over the false teachers. “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not vain in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 15:58.
“Be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour, whom withstand steadfast in your faith, knowing that the same sufferings are accomplished in your brethren who are in the world.” 1 Peter 5:8-9.
PRAYER POINT: Lord, let the truth of your word set your Church free from false doctrine, teaching and false believe in Jesus name.
