Topic: THE WORD OF GOD LIKE HAMMER

MEMORIZE: "Is not My word like a fire?" says the LORD, "And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?” Jeremiah 23:29

SCRIPTURE READING: Jeremiah 23:28-29

"The prophet who has a dream, let him tell a dream; And he who has My word, let him speak My word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat?" says the LORD. "Is not My word like a fire?" says the LORD, "And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?”

EXPOSITION: 

The word of God is God, and God is His word John 1:1-3. The word of God is compared to sword of the spirit with which to attack the enemy and being them in subjection unto God. His word is also called fire that consumes. It is also called hammer that break in pieces every obstacle to God’s purpose. The word of God is His power. It is efficient to create, plant, and build and also to destroy, demolish and consume. His word can bring or effect judgment and can also command peace. God never jokes with His word. He means everything He says.

Men's fancies (words) are light, and vain, and worthless, as the chaff which the wind drives away. But the word of God has substance in it; it is of value, is food for the soul, the bread of life. Wheat was the staple commodity of Canaan, that valley of vision, Deut. 8:8; Eze 27:17. There is as much difference between the vain fancies of men and the pure word of God as between the chaff and the wheat. It follows (Jeremiah 23:29), Is not my word like a fire, saith the Lord? Is their word so? Has it the power and efficacy that the word of God has? No; nothing like it; there is no more comparison than between painted fire and real fire. Theirs is like an deceiving meteor, leading men into by-paths and dangerous cliff. 

Note, The word of God is like fire. The law was a fiery law (Deut 33:2 “And he said: "The LORD came from Sinai, And dawned on them from Seir; He shone forth from Mount Paran, And He came with ten thousands of saints; From His right hand Came a fiery law for them.”), and of the gospel Christ says, I have come to send fire on the earth, Luke 12:49 "I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!”. 

Fire has different effects, according as the matter is on which it works;

i. it hardens clay, but softens wax (polish); 

ii. it consumes the dross, but purifies the gold. 

So the word of God is to some a savour of life unto life, to others of death unto death. God appeals here to the consciences of those to whom the word was sent: "Is not my word like fire? Has it not been so to you? Zechariah 1:6.  “Speak as you have found." 

It is compared likewise to a hammer breaking the rock in pieces. The unhumbled arrogant/ disobedient heart of man is like a rock; if it will not be melted by the word of God as the fire, it will be broken to pieces by it (the word of God) as the hammer. Whatever opposition is given to the word, it will be borne down and broken to pieces. 

PRAYER POINT: Lord, help us to see the wonders of your word in our lives and favour in Jesus name.
