Topic: DELIVERANCE FROM CAPTIVITY
MEMORIZE: “For thus saith the LORD, Ye have sold yourselves for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money." Isaiah 52:3.
SCRIPTURE READING: Jeremiah 32:36-41.
“36 And now therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence; 37 Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely: 38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God: 39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them: 40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me. 41 Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.”
EXPOSITION:
We have examined captivity in three perspectives: Universal, Inherited and Self-inflicted. Captivity is a confined place, a place of no freedom. It is a place where captives have no control over themselves; they are being controlled by the stronger force - their captors. In the spiritual perspective, captivity is whatever situation that resists a man to a state of inability to fulfill his destiny. It is a restriction that holds back a man to a life of limitation. On the other hand, redemption is an act of being saved from sin, error or evil. Men have lost their sinless nature since the days of Adam, and are unable to please God again, no matter how we wish or struggle. This now became the mission of our Lord Jesus Christ to come and rescue us from eternal doom that our universal disobedience has earned us. He came to bring us back in reconnection with God.
What Are The Possible Causes Of Captivity?
We will only mention some major points for our consumption:
1. Rebellion toward God and/or His servants – For Satan - Ezekiel 28:15-16 and for Korah, Numbers 16.
2. Disobedience to God’s word – 1 Samuel 13:13-14.
3. Uncontrolled appetite for sex – Samson was a victim – Judges 16.
4. Uncontrolled appetite for food – Esau was a victim - Hebrews 12:16-17.
5. Ungodly alliance with the enemies of God (the wicked) - 2 Chronicles 20:35-37.
6. Ungrateful heart; it lead to murmuring (ingratitude) – The Israelites in the wilderness were victims. Numbers 14:26-30.
7. Proud heart – Nebuchadnezzar was a victim. Daniel 4:30-33.
Only God can deliver the lawful captives from the hand of their captor(s) – Matthew 11:28-30; 12:29. It takes the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ to pay the price of our redemption. Therefore, to be delivered from any captivity, you must take these steps by faith.
1. Realize where you have fallen – Revelation 2:5. King Nebuchadnezzar will not cover his sin but confess it and praise God, the Most High – Daniel 4:34-37.
2. Admit it and be willing to be liberated – Isaiah 40:24-26. Pharaoh and King Herod refused to admit their prideness before God and were brought unto destruction. Exodus 14; Acts 12:21-23.
3. Personally know and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Personal Saviour – Romans 10:9-11.
4. Know for sure that the price of your redemption is fully paid through the blood of Jesus Christ and his death on the cross. Nothing is require from you than your faith in this finished work of Christ – “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree” Galatians 3:13. “And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation.” Revelation 5:9.
5. Cry out to God through the name of Jesus Christ for your deliverance – Hosea 5:14-15; 6:1-2; Jeremiah 28:12.
