Topic: THREE KINDS OF CAPTIVITY – Part 1
No 1: UNIVERSAL CAPTIVITY
MEMORIZE: “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” Genesis 2:17.
SCRIPTURE READING: Genesis 2:15-17.
“And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”
EXPOSITION:
Man, who was created in the image of God, was created with free will volition, ability to choose what is good and right. It is the ability to make decision on life issues base on whether it is good or evil. No one does things without thinking of its possible benefits. The limitation of man is his inability to know the future without the help of God (revelation). This makes it difficult to know the details of the consequence of one’s choice.
Adam and Eve were created perfectly and were given everything they would need for their survival and success in life, including divine guidance on what to do and what not. “And the Lord God commanded Adam saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” (Genesis 2:16-17). This warning was clear enough to obey, but maybe because he didn’t know what is called death, he did not know the grave consequence of eating the forbidden fruit. The same is happening today. Many are committing the abominable and never feel terrified because its consequence has not come upon them. But whenever they are caught by its judgment, they will then be regretting for the rest of their lives.
Should you experience death before you know its meaning and its bitter end? Should you be caught in robbery before you realize it is not good? Should you contact sexually transmitted disease or any other deadly disease before you know fornication and adultery or prostitution is not good? Should you become a victim of ritualist before you realize that no man should be trusted except God alone? No everything we experience gives us chance of learning from it… some comes with judgment without second chance. Adam and Eve committed the same and were chased away from the Garden of Eden, the Garden of God to work out their living by their sweat. “And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” Genesis 3:17-19.
This curse was transferred upon humanity through Adam, the whole world became sinful and dead to God. This curse formed universal captivity upon humanity. it is written, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.” Romans 5:12-15. Therefore, whoever is living in sin is in captivity of sin and will live under the judgment of God eternally if not repent.
PRAYER POINT:
Lord, I am in the world but not of the world, therefore, by your mercy, take away from me the judgment of the world in Jesus name.
