No 3:  SELF INFLICTED CAPTIVITY

MEMORIZE: “For thus saith the LORD, Ye have sold yourselves for nought;." Isaiah 52:3a.

SCRIPTURE READING: Isaiah 52:3-6.

“For thus saith the LORD, Ye have sold yourselves for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money. For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause. Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is blasphemed. Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.” 

EXPOSITION:

Self inflicted captivity is the third in the category. It is the affliction and sorrow caused by our carelessness or sinful commitment. It is the seed of sin sown with laughter but reaped with tears. It is our commitment that we later live to regret for the rest of our lives. It is the trouble caused by our lives that the children may likely inherit its repercussion. God said concerning the children of Israel that they have sold themselves for nought. It is like an underage girl who is begging men who are not interested in marrying her for sex. If she get unwanted pregnancy, she will suffer and also the baby.

The children of Israel sold themselves into the wickedness of the neighboring nations to the extend God sold them into the hand of the mighty nations for punishment. Israel and Judah  were carried away from their lands flowing with milk and honey to strange land of Assyria and Babylon respectively. But thanks to God who made promise of redemption to them even without payment.

Brethren, examine yourself, in what way have you sold yourself to the enemy? Through unholy relationship? Or through careless talking? Have you sold your soul unto the devil through blood covenant or cultism? Have you not exposed your secret to the enemy you thought is friend? The leprosy of Gehazi was neither universal nor inherited, but self-inflicted captivity – 2 Kings 5. The same is applicable to Korah, Datan and Abiram and their company, the sudden destruction that came upon them was self-inflicted captivity. The fall of Samson was never the will of God for his life, but self-inflicted. Every sin committed has its consequence, most of the time so deadly. The antidote to self inflicted captivity is sincere repentance and to abstain from sin and to turn totally to God for a new and holy life. Be careful of what you are causing for yourself and your children and for the generation coming behind. Unto Gehazi, the pronouncement was declared thus: “The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his (Prophet Elisha) presence a leper as white as snow.” 2 Kings 5:27.

PRAYER POINT:

Lord, Deliver me from the bitter consequence of my past mistakes in Jesus name.
