Topic: THREE KINDS OF CAPTIVITY – Part 2

No 2: INHERITED CAPTIVITY

MEMORIZE: “So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto the LORD; that he might fulfil the word of the LORD, which he spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.." 1 Kings 2:27.

SCRIPTURE READING: 1 Samuel 2:27-36.

“And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh's house? And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel? Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people? Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm,… and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever. And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age… And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a piece of bread..” 

EXPOSITION:

Yesterday, we discussed on Universal captivity as the judgement over sin committed by Adam & Eve that spread to all humanity and make us sinners even from birth. Today, we want to examine the second captivity which I called Inherited captivity. Right from the wilderness journey, when God instituted the law (known as Mosaic Law), He has chosen, consecrated and ordained Aaron and his lineage to stand before His as the priests in Israel. They are human mediators between God and the children of Israel. The hand of God’s favour chose him from among his tribe, Levi, and made him and his descendant priests in Israel. The grace continued in the family until it reached the turn of Eli and he and his children messed it up. God gave this comment about him saying, “Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh's house? And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel? Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?” 1 Samuel 2:28-29.

His error was that he did not train his children in the way and fear of the Lord. They did not hallow God in the sacrifices of Israel as they usually choose the best of the offering for themselves, instead of giving it to the Lord. Therefore, the judgment of God was, “Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me forever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm,… and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever. God is faithful in all His doing. His word is faithful. His judgment is true. He spoke and it came to pass. God rejected Eli and his descendant from being priest. I wondered why God allowed Doeg, an Edomite, the servant of king Saul, to kill Ahimelech, the priest and other eighty four priests and went scot-free. Until the word of God said, Abiathar the only surviving son of Ahimelech was declared a seed of Eli and was later thrust out of the priesthood service to become farmer in order to search for living by hard labour while his father and others suffered untimely death. “And unto Abiathar the priest said the king (Solomon), Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord GOD before David my father, and because thou hast been afflicted in all wherein my father was afflicted. So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto the LORD; that he might fulfil the word of the LORD, which he spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.” 1 Kings 2:26-27.

The descendant of Eli suffered the consequence of the sin of their father. This is inherited captivity. Are you also a victim of inherited captivity? Are you suffering for sins you are not the cause? Only God is the solution to this kind of captivity. Plead for His mercy and divine intervention, He will help you out today in Jesus name.

PRAYER POINT:

Lord, deliver me from any inherited captivity in Jesus name.

Lord, help me not to cause captivity for my children to inherit in their future in Jesus name.
