Topic: TEACH US TO NUMBER OUR DAYS
MEMORIZE: “So
teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Psalm
90:12
SCRIPTURE
READING: Genesis 47:7-9
“And
Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh: and Jacob
blessed Pharaoh. 8 And Pharaoh said unto Jacob, How old art thou? 9 And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of
the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have
the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of
the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.”
EXPOSITION:
"Lord,
teach us to number our days (Ps 90:12). Moses
prayed this prayer when he considered the futility (vainness) and shortness of
life earth. Life that appears like coin with two phases – head and tail. Good
to some people and sour or even bitter to others. Being condemned to have our
days shortened, it hereby calls for a sanctified use of the sad dispensation we
are now under. In other word, we pray, Lord, give us grace duly to consider how
few our days are, and how little a while we have to live in this world, so as
to fear God and be conscious of doing the right thing right when it is call
today."
Let us dig
deeper into this Scripture by examine these points.
1. It is an
excellent art rightly to number our days, so as not to be out in our
calculation, like the foolish rich man who was counting upon many years to come
when, that night, his soul was to be required of him. We must live under a constant apprehension of
the shortness and uncertainty of life and the near approach of death and
eternity. We must so number our days as to compare our work with them, and mind
it accordingly with a double diligence, as those that have no time to trifle.
2. Those
that would learn this arithmetic must pray for divine instruction, must go to
God, and beg of him to teach them by his Spirit, to put them upon considering
and to give them a good understanding.
3. We then
number our days to good purpose when thereby our hearts are inclined and
engaged to true wisdom, that is, to the practice of serious godliness. To be godly is to be wise; this is a thing to
which it is necessary that we apply our hearts, and the matter requires and
deserves a close application, to which frequent thoughts of the uncertainty of
our continuance here, and the certainty of our removal hence, will very much
contribute.
As you are growing in age,
remember that all men are of few days on earth. Therefore, maximize your grace
by being usable and useful in the hand of God. He will stand by you, and bless
you to be fruitful and fulfilled in His purpose. Be sure, you apply your heart
unto wisdom.
PRAYER
POINT: Lord, help
me to be wise hearted in counting our age so as to see life in your own way in
Jesus name.
