Topic: MERCY FOR HEALING
MEMORIZE: “So Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes. And immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him." Matthew 20:34.
SCRIPTURE READING: John 5:1-9.
“1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. 5 Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, "Do you want to be made well?" 7 The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me." 8 Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your bed and walk." 9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.”
EXPOSITION:
Jesus is the compassionate and wonders working God; who by his mercy has rescued many people from the captivity of the enemy, healed the sick, delivered the oppressed and set those who are possessed with evil spirits free. We experienced healing through any of these two means: 1. Through faith in Jesus Christ. 2. Through the Lord’s compassion (mercy).
MEN WERE HEALED BY THE LORD’S COMPASSION:
Faith is man’s initiative/move of putting God into action. It is having unfailing confidence in the possibility power of God. It is man’s strong weapon in connecting with God. It is highly commended by God. But that is to someone who knows, believes and hopes in God’s greatness. But greater than your faith is God’s mercy (His compassion). When man’s strength and hope failed, then God’s mercy steps in. God’s mercy overrules protocols. It helps the helpless; qualifies the unqualified; accepts and promotes the rejected and outcast.
There were hosts of people who got their healing by God’s mercy. Many beneficiaries of healing by His mercy did not even know Him. Let us look at the Scripture to examine some of them: Matthew 20:32-34 “So Jesus said, "What do you want Me to do for you?" They said to Him, "Lord, that our eyes may be opened." So Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes. And immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him.”
Mark 5:19 “However, Jesus … said to him, "Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you."”
Phil. 2:25-27 “Yet I considered it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, and fellow soldier, but your messenger and the one who ministered to my need; since he was longing for you all, and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. For indeed he was sick almost unto death; but God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.” Epaphroditus, a beloved brother and a useful companion of Apostle Paul, was sick to the point of death, but God had mercy on him and healed him. The healing was not necessarily because of his faith or prayers, but God’s mercy.
The son of the widow of Nain was restored back to life by the Lord’s mercy. “He went into a city called Nain; … And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother.” Luke 7:11-15. That this woman did not ask for Jesus’ help shows that she did not know Him. Even when Jesus told her not to weep again, she did not have reason not to weep again until Jesus raised her dead son back to life. May God’s mercy address your situation today and wipe away your tears in Jesus name.
PRAYER POINT:
Lord, let your mercy speak for me even when I don’t know what to do or ask for in Jesus name.
